According to the Shipping Industry Network, executives from the world's largest shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), have stated that by leveraging its largest fleet size and large new shipbuilding orders, MSC aims to provide the "most comprehensive route network in the market" and continuously improve the resilience and reliability of its supply chain to ensure that it can become a long-term partner for customers.
Bud Darr, Executive Vice President of Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Group, recently stated in a speech at Capital Link in New York that MSC's large-scale investments to expand capacity, including significant initiatives in the second-hand ship market, have enabled it to flexibly respond to market demand in the post 2M alliance era.
In other words, the biggest moat in the consolidation market used to be fleet size. It is precisely because MSC adheres to the traditional strategy of focusing on fleet size that its massive fleet size will not only avoid any negative impact caused by the termination of its 2M alliance with Danish giant Maersk, but also have sufficient capacity redundancy to cope with the current Red Sea crisis.
Bud Darr stated that to be frank, MSC is "ready".
He explained how MSC, led by billionaire Gianluigi Aponte's vision, continues to adhere to its original aspiration of becoming an ocean shipping company.
