New Ocean Shipbuilding has won the first order for two bulk carriers from an Egyptian shipowner

New Ocean Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Sumida Shipbuilding, has received an order for two more Crown 63 PLUS bulk carriers.

According to trade news, Egyptian shipowner United Marine Egypt (UME) recently ordered the construction of two 64000 deadweight ton bulk carriers at New Ocean Shipbuilding. The new ships will adopt the Crown 63 PLUS bulk carrier design independently developed by New Ocean Shipbuilding and are expected to be delivered in 2027. Each new ship costs approximately 35 million US dollars, with a total order value of approximately 70 million US dollars (approximately 507 million yuan).

As a reference, Clarkson's data shows that the current new shipbuilding price for a 61000-64500 deadweight ton Ultramax bulk carrier is $34 million, an increase of 4% from $32.75 million in the same period last year.

According to Clarkson's data, this UME order was officially signed on March 30th of this year, and will be operated by Monaco's shipowner C Transport Maritime after the new ship is delivered. This is also the first time that UME, as a shipowner, has placed an order to build a bulk carrier on its own.

It is understood that UME was founded in 2004 as a dry bulk carrier and later became one of the main wheat carriers of the Egyptian government, using leased Panamax bulk carriers. The company provides ship management, dry cargo, and roll on/roll off/passenger services, with 5 offices in Dubai, Egypt, and Sweden.

According to official website data, UME's fleet owns and operates three roll on/roll off ships, namely the 17100 ton class "Wasa Express" built in 1981, the 7600 ton class "Gubal Trader" built in 1979, and the 24700 ton class "Poseidon Express" built in 1990.

Since the beginning of this year, Sumida's Crown 63 PLUS bulk carrier has received a series of new orders. At the end of April, Huaguang Shipping and Japanese shipowner Chunri Shipping just added 2 and 1 Crown 63 PLUS bulk carrier orders to Sumida vessels, respectively. So far, Sumeida has 66 orders for this type of ship in hand, which will cover Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong by 2028.

It is understood that the Crown 63 PLUS (CROWN63 3.0 version) has collaborated with a Japanese professional design company to optimize the hull shape and adopt energy-saving and consumption reducing design, achieving the upgrading of advantageous ship types. The cargo capacity has significantly increased, and the speed and fuel consumption data have also significantly improved compared to the CROWN63 2.0 version. The EEDI value far exceeds the baseline, making it an excellent candidate among the Phase 3 ships.

This ship type has undergone multiple upgrades on the basis of the original brand ship type, with superior performance in all aspects: the cargo capacity, speed, fuel consumption and other data of the ship type have significantly improved, meeting the requirements of the International Maritime Organization IMO Ship Energy Efficiency Design Index EEDI 3 and Tier 3 emission standards. The design of the ship incorporates green concepts, optimizes the hull shape, and further demonstrates the advantages of energy conservation and consumption reduction. Continuously promoting product series configuration, providing multiple configuration options such as low resistance paint, desulfurization tower, high-voltage shore power system, and ship intelligent system, to meet the ship usage needs of different shipowners in various scenarios.

According to Clarkson's data, at present, New Ocean Shipbuilding has 73 orders of 4.41 million deadweight tons in total, including 69 bulk carriers, 3 container ships and 1 offshore factory ship. The delivery date is scheduled to 2027. In the field of Ultramax bulk carriers, New Ocean Shipbuilding currently holds 61 orders, ranking first in the world.
